Korben's first scare....

On our way home from the hospital, I rode in the back with Korben and I noticed one time that he was almost gagging a little bit, like he had a very dry throat or something. It didn't really surprise me that much because I had had a cold for the last week and I figured he would be getting soon too :(   when we got home he seemed to be doing fine.  So i didn't worry about it... too much! I kept a close eye on him and by 10pm or so was noticing he was doing it again. So, i dropped a couple of Saline drops in his nose and gave him a little drink of water.  It seemed to work for a few minutes and then he was doing it...AGAIN! The poor little guy was already so tired because he did not rest well at all the night before in the hospital, and he just could not get to sleep for more than 5 or 10 minutes before he was gagging again. I felt so bad! Ben and I started watching close, and noticed a couple times that he would stop breathing. Not just the normal new born baby stop breathing for like a few seconds either. He was actually trying to breath and not getting any air. A couple of times I noticed him turning blue around his mouth... SCARY!  It continued to get worse and worse and so Ben called his mom for advise and Corina called her mom also. They both advised us to call the Parents Help Line because they said it's normal for them to stop breathing but not to turn blue. Ben's mom also told us to lay him on our chest because babies have to learn a breathing pattern and it's fact that if you put two people next to each other that they will synchronize* (not sure if I spelled that right) breathing patterns. So Ben called the Help Line and they said the same thing. Well, we knew all that anyways, but it was not the Normal New Born Baby breathing as I mentioned before. They advised us to get him to the ER just to make sure everything was ok. In the mean time I layed him on my chest and he seemed to be breathing and sleeping great for about 10 minutes...then, all of the sudden he stopped getting air and he was jerking from trying to breath. I sat him up quickly and he was still jerking for about 5 seconds...and then he went limp on me. Scared me to death! After a couple seconds he started breathing again, and we decided we were taking him to the ER. When we got there he was doing fine, never had another problem the entire time we were there. The Doc checked him out for about 2 minutes and then had them take a urine sample, a blood sample, and get X-rays taken. All of this took about 30 minutes. Then we waited...and waited...and waited... and waited some more. We were all sooo tired we could hardly stay awake. Ben layed on the bed with Korben for and hour and slept and then i was literally falling out of my chair, so ben let me lay on the bed for a bit. I got about a 30 minute nap during which i woke up about 5 times to check on Korben. Ben leaned against the bed while sitting in the chair and slept a while longer. They put him on a monitor that went off every freaking time he moved the tiniest little bit. Let me tell you, that was so frustrating while trying to feed him. Every time I started feeding him someone would come in and check him and so I had to stop feeding him, then he would fall asleep and only sleep a few minutes before he would wake up because he was so hungry and again they would come and start poking around on him so he would only get to eat for 5 minutes or less. The poor little Boy was Sooooo tired and hungry, it just broke my heart! So after sitting in the ER for 6 hours with absolutely no word as to what as going on, the doctor finally came back and told us that he was dehydrated and they were going to put us in a room upstairs and keep him on fluids all day. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!?! We had been sitting there for 6 hours and they could have had him on the stupid fluids! We complained and wanted to talk to the Pediatrician who was ordering this when he hadn't even come and checked him out himself. It took them about 30 minutes to get him there and he explained it all to us and we said we were not staying the whole day. He told us all of our options and one of them was that we could just take him home and force feed him like crazy to get him rehydrated. We said we would do that and of course that was a problem for him. He said that he was just not comfortable with that, that he really wanted us to do some fluids, Ben asked him what the minimum of time would be for us to stay there so he could get fluids and he said 30 minutes minimum and then he would have to check him again and go from there. We agreed to do that. About 10 minutes later he came back in and said he was going to put him on a slower IV that would take 3 hours. GRRRR.... we said we were just going to go home then and so they finally agreed to do the 30 minute IV. They were so rough putting the IV in his tiny little hand! I cried and cried, because he didn't cry when they poked him for the blood sample ( which they took with a needle in his arm), he didn't cry from getting poked while putting the IV in, no... he cried from the stupid lady squeezing his hand down into his arm.  She was pushing and twisting that needle around in his hand for 2 minutes before she pulled it back a little and was like " oh, i just had it in too far!". GRRR.... I was so mad! So, he got the 30 minute IV and he came back and checked him and he said he was looking better but to go ahead and do another 30 minutes and then let him go home. FINALLY!!!! After they got him off of it and all cleaned up, it took them 45 minutes just to get the stupid discharge papers for us to sign....oh, and there was only one or two other people in the ER and about 10 nurses besides all the office people just walking around, laughing, and making jokes to each other.  So, after a 9 hour ER visit, we were finally home. And man, it felt so good to shower! By the time I got to sleep that night I had been up for 36 hours. Not so good for someone who had just had a baby two days before and was still exhausted from that! Needless to say, we hate that place and will never go back unless absolutely necessary... The clinic in Glennallen has WAAAY better service than here even when they have 5 people in the ER and they only have 1 Doctor and 2 or 3 Nurses.
A lesson learned I guess!
Anyways, sorry it's a horribly long post!
Here are the pictures of our little trooper.
When they let his arm go he just held it with his other hand for a while. So sad..made Mommy cry:(

My Poor Baby :(

He was a little trooper!

He got a bath when we got home and he slept so good after that.

All Fresh and ready for sleep.

Kyzer was so happy to have him back home and he wanted to snuggle him so bad!

  1. I try to avoid our ER if at all possible. It's not the best. I always try to see my doctor or savannahs doctor. And it's been that way a long time. When I had stomach problems as a teen, I was in the ER every couple months and I think one time I had a good experience. All the other times were terrible. It seems like most of the people don't care as much as you would think they would.
